Los Angeles' Greenbar Distillery's new City Bright Gin is an interesting spirit that celebrates the flavors of LA. Designed to encapsulate the flavors of East and South Asia and the tastes of Mexico and the Middle East, City Bright Gin is meant to showcase the cultural melting pot of the city by celebrating its multifaceted flavors. This liquor boasts an impressive ingredient list and includes herbs and spices such as ancho chiles, angelica, basil, California bay, cardamom, cassia, coriander, cubeb, black cumin, fennel, grapefruit, lemon balm, lemon, lemongrass, kaffir lime, lime, pink peppercorn, Sichuan peppercorn, peppermint, spearmint and star anise.
While the extensive list of ingredients may cause some concerns, the flavor of the gin is actually quite amazing. The nose is complex as the kaffir lime catches and grapefruit stand at the forefront, but hidden underneath is a subtle earthiness. The palate showcases the pepper and chiles, but not in a spicy way. Instead there is a pleasant pungency to the spirit that complements the notes of anise, mint and juniper. The finish is earth and works well to balance the brightness of the previous flavors. All in all, City Bright Gin is a wonderful celebration of flavors that does good by its call to cultural exchange.
