This concept packaging for Cícero brand canned sardines was developed by Cátia Oliveira, a graphic design student at The Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave in Portugal.
The packaging artfully communicates the many flavors offered by having the illustrated fish on each box give a subtle nod to cultural elements and ingredients from to each region. This can be seen with the Greek key-inspired patterns, as well as the Dia de los Muertos-like markings on the sardines that channel the flavors of Mexico. Each illustrated fish is set upon a bed of herbs and ingredients, making their flavors seem to pop right off of the packaging, so it's pretty hard to mistake one fish for another, since their illustrations and color schemes are so distinct.
On the backs of the sardine packages, the scheme is minimal, but still references the distinct coloring that matches each flavor.
