The Chapel of Eternal Light was commissioned by the village council of Azores as "a significant urban and social gesture." The thought-provoking structure is located in a cemetery on São Miguel Island in Portugal. The Portuguese studio Bernardo Rodrigues Architects was the firm commissioned to carry out this important project.
When designing the Chapel of Eternal Light, the architectural practice was mindful of the shape and placement. Through its decisions, the studio hoped to evoke the image of "a flower tilting forward towards the sun or bowing down to the village and ocean." While the exterior of the building, which is clad in green marble, certainly draws attention, the interior functions as what the architects have dubbed a "time apparatus."
