Brave Search is a Privacy-Protected Alternative to Google
Josh Thompson-Persaud — June 28, 2021 — Tech
Brave Search, a privacy-protecting search engine, recently opened its global beta to the public. Brave, the search engine's publisher, created an independent search index that does not rely on Google's results except in cases of low search results of relevancy. This allows the search engine to avoid Google's surveillance. Additionally, Brave Search will not use algorithms to bias search results to promote privacy and prevent systemic discrimination. Instead, the search engine will host Goggles, an open-source, community-curated ranking model that allows users to create their own search algorithms.
Brave Search will eventually become the default search engine for the Brave Browser. Alongside the free-to-use version of Brave Search, Brave plans to monetize the engine with an ad-inclusive version and an ad-free premium version.
