The 'Australian Islamic Center' is an architecturally unique mosque and community center for the Muslim population in Melbourne. Designed by award winning architect Glenn Murcutt, the first images released of the concept show a series of triangular yellow skylights that will cast a calming glow on the rooms inside.
Slated for completion towards the end of 2016, the Australian Islamic Center will be a boon for both the Muslims in Newport -- the Melbourne suburb in which the mosque is being built -- and non-Muslims interested in learning about Islamic religion and culture. The community center within the building will house a small museum with exhibits that relate to Islam.
The yellow of the rooftop skylights was chosen as a reference to the traditional star and crescent that symbolize the Islamic faith.
