Garmin International has launched a high-tech aircraft gadget that is designed to curb some of the burden on pilots who may find themselves in an emergency situation by automatically activating the autopilot feature and shepherding the aircraft to the nearest airport.
Dubbed 'Smart Glide,' this particular airplane gadget responds to engine shutdown situations by enforcing a desirable gliding speed whilst taking into account variables such as weather, wind conditions, flight rules, terrain and the locations of nearby airports in order to steer the aircraft to safety.
When the aircraft is nearing an airport, the 'Smart Glide' alerts the pilot so that they can be ready to take over manual control of the aircraft for the purposes of landing.
Available on GTN Xi navigators with Garmin flight displays, this flight gadget is designed to assist pilots in crisis situations and potentially save their lives as well as those of passengers.
