One of the Millennium Development Goals, also known as the MDGs, set in 2000 for which the deadline is quickly approaching (next year) was to improve maternal health innovations and maternal health more broadly. Specifically, the goal was to reduce the maternal mortality ratio by three quarters from 1990 to 2015. In 2013, they gave an update. "While progress falls short of achieving MDG 5 by the 2015 deadline, all regions have made important gains," the United Nations End Poverty wrote. "Globally, the ratio declined from 400 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 210 in 2010." They pay attention to what's working and what's not working as well as including what countries have shown significant strides.
