These stunning x-ray portraits are by Japanese photographers Ayako Kanda and Mayuka Hayashi.
Kanda and Hayashi captured these eerie x-ray portraits using an actual Computed Tomography (CT) scanner and x-ray machines, as well as the aid of four couples. The Japanese photographers submitted these x-ray photos for their senior thesis exhibition at Musashino Art University and wanted to show more than "the finite nature of our bodies."
It's easy at first glance to be repulsed by the x-ray images since x-rays by themselves are associated with hospitals and therefore illness. But if one allows themselves to move beyond their first impressions, they might see that these x-ray portraits reveal a truly unique and deep level of intimacy that would not otherwise be revealed if the photos were of the tradition flesh form.
