Famed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma recently announced plans to create a new civic center with a wooden screen wrapping around the exterior. Although wood is a very traditional building material, timber is increasingly being used as a contemporary finish for modern buildings. This beautiful new tower will use timber to create a mesmerizing spiraled design.
Kuma's new building will be know as The Darling Exchange and it will be located by Sydney's Darling Harbour. Like Kuma's other buildings, the civic center will boast contemporary timber cladding around the exterior. To give the building an even more unique look, each of the six floors will be positioned slightly off center to create a spiraling design. When circular geometry is combined with the wood screen, the design will allow for snippets of the activity inside to be viewed from the plaza below.
