Back in September 2015, Chicago-based fashion designer Laura Thapthimkuna launched a Kickstarter campaign for her 3D-printed Vortex Dress, a fashion design inspired by black holes. After more than a year of work on the project, she has now revealed the finished creation, which will be shown off in exhibits, fashion shoots and galleries.
One of the challenges in making the garment entirely with 3D printing involved working around weight distribution and center of gravity. To create the 3D-printed fashion piece, the design began with 2D sketches that were turned into 3D design files with CAD software. Finally, the creation came to life as a piece of resin that was finished with a shiny coat of black paint.
As avant-garde as this 3D-printed piece of fashion may be, it is a great indicator for the level of intricacy and customization that may go into garments of the future.
