Bernardo Bader Architekten designed this timber cottage located in the countryside of Kaltschmieden, Doren. The home replaces a worn-down farmhouse that was passed down through the client's family for generations, but was no longer livable.
The architects wanted to create a structure that did not overwhelm the natural landscape or surrounding architecture, most of which are simple, architectural buildings. The home was designed so that the living area, attic, garage and terrace could form a singular volume underneath what the architects describe as "homogeneous board skin."
The ridged roof is intended to "reactivate" the traditional form of the farmhouse, while managing to remain contemporary and current. The house was fashioned from recycled timber from the original building, which forms the strips of cladding and window shutters, along with locally sourced wood.
