The Little Big Playmat Takes a Creative Path to Design Problems

The Little Big Playmat is an ambitious and innovative approach to addressing the question of how cities can be improved for their inhabitants. By convening with "imagination experts" ranging from the ages of five to 13, the project aims to tap into the boundless creative potential of young minds to envision the ideal urban environment.

The Little Big Think Tank, which is the name of the imagination expert panel, worked in collaboration with urban planner Lior Steinberg. In this way, the project bridges the gap between imaginative concepts and practical urban planning, demonstrating the feasibility of creative ideas. While the project resulted in a publication, another notable product is the creation of The Little Big Playmat—which is an open-source design, as well. Instead of emphasizing roads and parking, the playmat features shared mobility hubs, green spaces, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, reflecting a shift towards more people-centric urban planning.
