The Baobab is indeed a tree, but it's also the name of a 35-story tower conceived by Michael Green Architects (MGA) for Paris. The concept is part of the Reinventer Paris competition which, unsurprisingly, ponders how to reinvent and refresh the city architecturally.
The tower would make use of MGA's reputed wood construction methods and, it is claimed, would be able to outperform steel in the event of a fire. Located on Boulevard Pershing, the Baobab project would include the main tower as well as a number of smaller wood buildings nearby. It wouldn't merely cater to the rich and would also include social housing and a student hotel
Ultimately, the Baobab isn't just an architectural project but a societal one that encourages "innovation, youthful social contact and overall community building".
