The team from Taylor_Smyth Architects recently transformed West Preparatory Junior Public School in Toronto’s Forest Hill neighbourhood with an infusion of multi-hued window elements. The redesign is said to "maximizes the school’s assembly space on a minimal budget".
Built in 1941, West Preparatory Junior Public School has undergone a number of expansions throughout the years but this one stands out as the most memorable. The school's 225-square-metre addition is connected next to the structure's existing gymnasium.
This multipurpose interior can be used as a communal assembly space, a lunch area or a music room for students. Keeping with the materiality of the school's existing brick facade, the team from Taylor_Smyth Architects infused their addition with a pattern of irregular window elements that are covered with colored film. When penetrated with sunlight, the windows modulate colored light and transform this school's interior.
