Sharkbanz and Modom Surf recently teamed up to create an innovative new surfing leash that has the potential to drastically improve the safety of surfers in the water.
The 'Shark Leash' is no different from existing surfing leash designs, except that it makes use of a patented magnetic technology from Sharkbanz in order to generate electromagnetic fields that essentially block a shark's electrical sense, which causes them to flee. The company describes that the discomfort this causes the shark is minimal and equivalent to "suddenly shining a very bright light in another person’s eyes in a dark room."
While deterring many different types of sharks and stingrays, the surfing leash seems to have no effect on other sea life like dolphins and turtles.
