Beijing-based MAD Architects produces a concept for the Courtyard Kindergarten and the most defining feature is a dynamic rooftop playground. The site produces a fusion of old and new which is what makes the construction so special and awe-inspiring. For one, MAD Architects' project builds on an existing structure that dates back to the 18th century. With the intent of preserving cultural traditions and historic architectural elements, the firm strategically injects a sense of contemporary design.
An interesting bit of information about the inspiration behind the rooftop playground is that the idea originated from a Chinese proverb. The saying "if you go three days without being punished, the roof will cave in" is directed at misbehaving children. It is not hard to draw parallels between the proverb and the rooftop playground.
