In an effort to prevent unwanted pregnancies in Ghana and West Africa, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is sending in long-flying drones to deliver supplies. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been used to deliver supplies and provide emergency assistance before, but this mission is specific to contraceptives.
UNFPA is using supply drones to prevent unwanted pregnancies by getting condoms, birth control pills and other medical cargo to Ghana's upper east, which is difficult to access because of poor road conditions. The UAVs can carry 4.5 pounds, are 5 feet wide and can complete their mission in 30 minutes, compared to what used to be a two day journey. If this campaign is successful, the organization plans to extend the program to Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Mozambique and Ethiopia.
