Community-Enhancing Modular Spaces

Fiona Hartley and Ellie Fox Johnson Make Croydon More Sociable

Fiona Hartley and Ellie Fox Johnson create a vibrant modular space that is specifically designed to bring the community of Croydon, South London closer together. The two young designers are graduates of the Central Saint Martins College and the 'College Square' is their final project.

The modular space captures your attention from far away with its deconstructed millennial pink "freestanding steel-frame archway." Fiona Hartley and Ellie Fox Johnson use a dual color palette for the "wood-clad furnishings" — the elements that bring about the freedom for reconfiguration. These voluminous blocks vary in shape and can satisfy a number of functions. Depending on the social situation, individuals or groups can manipulate the modular space to create "stages or tiered blocks" that will evolve to fit the user's needs.
