Geneva-based architect Stef Claes draws inspiration from mid-century elements and local architecture when creating the House in the Fields. This is a low-lying house that is nestled in the calm Belgian countryside filled with agricultural surroundings. The house is defined by its white-painted walls and black accents to add some contrast. This also nods to the mid-century inspiration from the US. Other traditional elements include the roof which is made from terracotta tiling.
Claes explains the design concept to Dezeen, stating "The location of the house is pretty special, it is located in wide open fields, long, big stretches of agricultural land, with long narrow paths and roads parallel to it. The house is like a subtle pencil strike in the field that mimics the movement of the landscape – present but absent in the same way. To fit in the program and create a constant relationship with the beauty of the surroundings, we opted for a low and long volume, with easy physical and visual access to the sides."
