Equal Pay Day was started in 1996 as a way to draw attention to the fact that women continue to earn significantly less than their male peers. Due to the fact that women continue to earn just 79 cents for every dollar a man makes, The Works is only charging women 79 percent of their total bill. Men on the other hand, must pay the full price for their order. As one of The Works managers explains, the promotion helps to raise awareness about the gender pay gap and "brings it right to the fore in a way just the statistic does not."
While the promotion does not actually solve the issue of the wage gap, it does demonstrate a creative way to mark Equal Pay Day 2016.
