Grand Theatrical Residences

The Backstage House is Modeled After a Theater

The 'Backstage House,' designed by Y+M Design Office, features two layers. The first layer is comprised of a living room, made to resemble a miniature house, while the second functions as a perimeter wall surrounding extra rooms and patios. The home is located in Tokushima, Japan, with views of Mount Bizan in the distance.

The architects compare the residence to a theater, with the double-height living area functioning as "the stage," and the supplementary rooms, located two levels above, acting as the "behind-the-scenes" areas -- hence, the title "Backstage House."

Though the central structure resembles the archetypal house -- gabled roof, traditional windows -- the wooden wall surrounding it is both curvaceous and angular. Besides being visually arresting, the wall offers the home's inhabitants privacy from both inside and outside the home.
