Deceptive Concrete Residences

The AV House by BAK Arquitectos Shows Cement Can Have Warmth

At first glance, the AV House may look like a modern wooden cabin, but it is made out of concrete. The main reason for the deception is the way the concrete has been placed together in panel-like layers, which mimics the look of wood. An example of Brutalist architecture, which revolves around linear, fortresslike and blockish designs, the AV House is nevertheless full of warmth, something many people might have found impossible all things considered.

Designed by BAK Arquitectos, the AV House mostly like draws a bit of its warmth from the surrounding pine trees. Fast Co. Design notes that "the color and pattern of the timber-shuttered concrete echoes the [texture of the] bark." The architects themselves state that the AV House has a "strong and mimetic presence, so [that] the work is in harmony with the landscape."
