The Grenfell Campus of Memorial University, the largest university in Atlantic Canada, is hosting an innovative aboriginal-inspired event that consists of powwow performances, community drumming and traditional aboriginal dancing.
The first aboriginal-specific orientation event ever held in the campus, the Community Drum and Powwow Showcase features two drumming groups, Strong Women and Strong Bear, and is part of wider orientation celebrations on the Grenfell Campus.
Considering that a sizeable percentage of the university's students hail from Aboriginal backgrounds, this aboriginal-inspired orientation event is a great way to make incoming aboriginal students feel welcome while also exposing students of all cultures to traditional powwow.
While aboriginal cultures had been suppressed in Canada for a long time, the Community Drum and Powwow Showcase shows that campus events are a great platform for these cultures to showcase their pride and unique traditions by latching onto the enthusiasm and vigor of incoming college students.
