Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University developed a 3D photo editing tool that allows images to be rendered into three dimensional objects. Rather than merely resizing or moving objects in pictures around, thanks to this technology editors can turn or flip objects and even "expose surfaces not visible in the original photograph."
According to a press release from the university, 2D objects in pictures can be manipulated into a 3D format due to the availability online of the "numerical models of everyday objects." Leading the team of researchers is associate research professor of robotics Yaser Sheikh. This 3D photo editing enables people to go beyond what they see in a photo and add an element of what they know, states PhD student Natasha Kholgade. This digital manipulation ensures the objects fit the photo exactly using geometry.
