The woodturning technique involves treating wood and molding shapes onto it as it turns on an axis of rotation. With the increasingly digitized design world, one can imagine that artisanal approaches such as this one are on the decline. Studio Sain — which was founded in 2019 by designers Martijn Rigters and Namuun Zimmermann, decided to embrace the woodturning technique and showcase the objects as part of Vienna Design Week's Passionswege 2019 program. For the project, which was dubbed 'Bulbous,' the studio worked with Hermann Viehauser — "one of Austria's last remaining woodturners."
'Bulbous' is adamant in exploring the contemporary potential of a traditional craft such as the woodturning technique. Completed by hand, the collection consists of a modular shelving system, a movable light, as well as a mirror.
