'Studio Gang' recently completed a contemporary theater that is wrapped in glass and wooden battens. Unlike traditional theaters, this space features a transparent and flexible design that is intended to unite performers and the audience.
The Writers Theatre is located in Glencoe, Illinois, which is a suburb just outside of Chicago. The new two-storey building boasts a large, flexible space that is designed to accommodate growth. The exterior of the building features a concrete facade with a plaster finish. The second storey of the building is wrapped in glass and wooden battens that allow for natural light to flood the stadium-style space inside. In warm weather, the central part of the building can open up to the outside in order to extend the theater's functional space.
The flexible design ultimately helps to blur the boundaries between the theater and the natural environment.
