William Stout Architectural Books, the renowned design book store located in the heart of San Francisco's historic Jackson Square neighborhood, celebrates their 50th anniversary this month. A critical resource for architects and designers since 1974, the bookstore was operated by its namesake founder, William “Bill” Stout—an architect, passionate book collector, publisher, and educator. Upon Bill’s retirement in 2022, Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity acquired the store with a mission to preserve Stout’s vital role in the design world.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of William Stout Architectural Books – and honor the impressive legacy Stout himself created - the store has collected quotes about Stout’s impact from various people who hold the store close to their heart, including publisher Lars Müller, architects Jacques Herzog and Steven Holl. They’ll be sharing these stories on social media throughout December. Always a leading voice in the design community, the shop recently held events with a variety of key designers, including a talk with Marc Newson at the Transamerica Pyramid and a book launch of the reissued Leonard Koren title Undesigning the Bath with the JB Blunk Estate. Upcoming events include talks with Jeanne Gang, Todd Oldham, and many others next year.
