Madeleine Architects Designs the Recipe House in Chavronay
Amy Duong — June 1, 2023 — Art & Design
Swiss design studio Madeleine Architects designs the Recipe House, which is a converted pigsty. The space is clad in both lime and hemp in order to create the base foundation of what now functions as a home and office. The Recipe home rests between a farm and a henhouse and is a place intended for retirement for the parents of the family. The pigsty has a brick shell that was coated with insulated lime and hemp before being complete with metal-clad along the upper level.
The studio explains the design, stating that it is "Crafted by the marriage of the mineral [lime] and the vegetal [hemp], an insulating layer is directly applied to the existing facade, like an ointment caring for a wound. An office occupies the ground floor, while a parental refuge takes over the upper floor, an elevation whose open space is related to two opposite orientations which are equally rich in their context. The picturesque orchard to the east responds to the twilight of the sun setting over the barn roofs to the west."
