To celebrate its 180th anniversary, Takashimaya Osechi lunches will be served in a breathtaking 18K gold bento box. If you yawned in the face of $1,000 dollar cupcakes and $5,000 burgers are just not your bag, perhaps this $229,000 traditional Japanese boxed lunch will tickle your fancy. The successful Japanese department store Takashimaya is known for their high-end renditions of the traditional Japanese dish Osechi, which is typically consumed on the first of January. The meal consists of rice, meat and root vegetables contorted into the kind of stellar presentation the Japanese are known for.
The boxes were created by famed Japanese goldsmith Koichi Ishikawa and the legendary Japanese sculptor Hoseki Okuyama. For the first time ever, those who preorder their Takashimaya Osechi lunches before the end of October will have the chance to win one of three of the opulent boxes.
These lunch boxes are coveted for sure, but very few will even have the option to partake in such an extravagant contest; however, if you're seriously considering it, be forewarned, I sincerely doubt the box is dishwasher safe.
