The Tacita Dean 'Fatigues' installation is created using ordinary white chalk and six enormous blackboards. Rather than offering her original filmed footage of the rocky Afghanistan landscape, Dean chose to render these rugged terrains against the pitch-black canvases.
The artist used the ordinary school supply in an extraordinary way, smudging and blending the chalk to capture the sweeping mountainsides. In some of her renderings, she has included subtle lines to illustrate the rolling rivers and stormy elements. The former banking hall has been transformed into a gallery installation spanning across two levels. The decorative staircase allows patrons to view the expansive murals from varying angles -- shifting the relationship between the work and the gazer.
Commissioned for the dOCUMENTA (13) festival in Kassel, Germany, the Tacita Dean 'Fatigues' installation is immersive and awe-inspiring.
