Brex, a fledgling fintech startup, has recently received $57 million in funding to create a startup credit card. This new credit card being developed by Brex aims to be specifically geared for startups and has received funding from Y Combinator, PayPal founders and others. The startup credit card has already received a private launch and has accumulated 1,000 customers, including Flexport, Algolia, Affirm and Y Combinator itself.
The new type of credit card aims to reimagine the corporate credit card for the startup era. Unlike conventional systems, the startup credit card underwrites businesses and sidesteps credit history. Instead, the card would consider factors such as investors in the startup, the equity they hold, cash balance and spending patterns. The first five cards issued to a startup are free, with all future cards costing $5 a month.
