Sonoco and Cristalco have collaborated to develop a recyclable cardboard container for Cristalco’s icing sugar brand, Daddy Sugar. The new container replaces the previous plastic packaging, which consisted of a polyethylene body, an oriented polystyrene sleeve, and a polypropylene lid. The redesigned container features a cardboard body with a polypropylene sprinkler, reducing the plastic content by 80%. The cardboard used in the container is composed of 68% recycled fiber and includes a polyethylene film inner liner to protect the sugar from humidity and prevent caking.
The lid, produced by Rovip, has two openings: one with small holes for sprinkling and another wider opening for pastry-making. The design aims to be eco-friendly while maintaining functionality, including easy dispensing, opening, and closing, as well as a tamper-evident seal. The lid is secured in the container without glue to minimize material use and prevent contamination. This new packaging solution, launched in June 2024, is part of Cristalco’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance the sustainability of its products.
