The first-ever solar-powered rail line is now operational in the United Kingdom, with trains currently running. The solar-powered rail line is powered by approximately 100 solar panels, that divert energy to a train track located near Aldershot in Hampshire. The people behind the initiative indicate that sustainable energy could provide power to 20% of the Railway system in Liverpool, as well as 15% of the power in Kent, Sussex, and Wessex.
The success of this project could result in the future adoption of similar technology. The United Kingdome government has set a goal to have the rial system not use diesel fuels at all by the year 2040. This could mean that solar technology would be expanded to power the entirety of the country's railway infrastructure.
