Porsche has purchased a minority stake in a sensor startup, named TriEye. The sensor startup is based out of Isreal and creates technology for self-driving vehicles to operate in poor weather conditions. TriEye was founded in 2017 and the amount that Porsche invested, as well as the terms, were not publicly disclosed.
For autonomous driving technology to operate, it relies on cameras as well as sensors. However, the technology has to work in all weather conditions. TriEye believes that the use of short-wave infrared or SWIR sensors can help these systems operate under harsh conditions. TriEye Will launch a SWIR camera in 2020.
Porsche's investment in the company means it is allocating resources into driving assistance technology. This could help Porsche with its autonomous infrastructure in the future.
