John Oliver Employs Rom Com Tricks to Avoid Scottish Independence
Alyson Wyers — September 18, 2014 — Pop Culture
In a last ditch effort to woo voters and stop Scottish Independence, John Oliver pulled out his best romantic comedy strategies on his show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. On Thursday there will be a referendum where Scots will vote about whether or not they would live their country to leave the United Kingdom and no longer be a part of Great Britain.
In the clip, John Oliver goes over both sides of the Scottish Independence debate, making many jokes along the way. Several of the jokes are at the expense of British Prime Minister David Cameron, who Oliver deems is not making enough of an effort. Instead, he chokes down some haggis, invites a unicorn mascot onstage, has a bagpipe band play and shows Love Actually-inspired notecards.
