San Patrignano is a social business located approximately 15 kilometers away from Rimini in Italy. It offers free drug rehabilitation programs that operate without funding from either the government or the families of those with drug abuse problems.
Since 1978, San Patrignano has helped to rehabilitate over 18,000 people. Its goal is to ensure that those suffering from addiction, those who have sought help, are given the resources, education and professional training programs that allow them to become a fully integrated member of society. Teaching young men and women a trade or profession is an integral part of San Patrignano’s innovative recovery program.
While its description seems to be the mission of a nonprofit drug rehab program, San Patrignano is different, as it uses its earned income to continue to offer state-of-the-art facilities. Through managing a variety of industry groups, including home design, food, award-winning wines, events such as horse shows, graphic arts, breeding horses and dogs, nurseries and a gift shop, this social enterprise is able to offer not only quality commercial products, but also a community-focused recovery program for the masses.
Its official mission encompasses seven different objectives: to welcome and rehabilitate, to offer this service completely free of charge, to put an end to addiction, to use professional training, to provide support to families and to collect economic resources through its activities.
It’s clear that San Patrignano, as both a business and a drug rehabilitation center, is an exceptional example of a social entrepreneurship. Don’t call San Patrignano a community for drug addicts, though. “Ours is a community for living, where you can restart in life after years spent as a social outcast. Ours, if we really need a definition, is a community against social marginalization, “says Vincenzo Muccioli, the founder of the San Patrignano community.
