Architecture made from a flying object? It's in the making, thanks to roboticist Raffaello D'Andrea and architects Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohle. Their project consists of four autonomous, quadrocopter robots that can assemble big buildings by lifting and placing bricks.
Programmed to work as a team, the four quadrocopter robots are made with a motion-tracking system and grapplers on their undersides, allowing them to navigate around each other and other objects as well as pick up the bricks and move them to the correct spots. Only two robots work at any given time, and because they operate on batteries, when their power runs out, the two quadrocopter robots just go to a charging station and are replaced by the other two robots.
