EXIT Architects have orchestrated a complete design makeover via its launch of the 'Palencia Civic Center.' The Spanish domain is meant to foster an array of community activity with classrooms, a library and a grand auditorium. And while these spaces resonate with countless spaces of a similar nature, they take root on the most unusual of grounds.
The Palencia Civic Center was once a correctional facility. Though EXIT Architects tore down many of the structures wings, it still retains its authentic feel. The all-white halls are largely reminiscent of classic confinement layouts, as is its sprawling brick-laden roof.
EXIT Architects focus on this transformative task speaks to a broader refurbishing movement. Making something great out of abandoned or decrepit dwellings has been at the heart of numerous environmentally-sound construction ventures, and the Palencia Civic Center is a part of this shift.
