Spanish architecture firm XStudio integrates a ceramics workshop and apartment complex into what was once a worn-out shell of an abandoned bar. The project is dubbed House M and the team takes over an old building in the corner of the Canary Islands. Nestled in the Arenales neighborhood in Las Palmas, the firm retains the worn facade and replaced the bar on the ground floor with a ceramics workshop. An apartment is built above for the owner.
Partner at XStudio, Ancor Suárez shares with Dezeen, "The Arenales neighbourhood is very central, but despite that, it has suffered decades of degradation. It is a humble neighbourhood, with mostly old houses that are poorly preserved and that are a testament to better times. However, that 'decay' gives it a special charm in our opinion. We believe that responding with humble and honest architecture was the best way to relate to the environment."
