90 years ago, the Paimio Sanatorium building was completed and to celebrate the special moment, Artek unveils a new Paimio Sanatorium Anniversary collection. The series celebrates the foundation and raises awareness for the building from when it first opened in 1933. It was meant to be a 'medical instrument' to care for patients with tuberculosis. Every single design detail was focused on the needs of their recovery.
Aino and Alvar Aaltos created the iconic furniture design for the hospital and followed it with a series of colors. Armchair 41 was first designed in 1932 for the sanatorium and was originally known as the Paimio Armchair. It is a light and organic shape that helps patients breathe -- it is also made from bent birch wood and lamella. The new version has a seat and frame using oiled natural birch with a limited amount of 90 pieces only. For each chair sold, the company will donate €500 to the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation.
