CaliBurger's store in Pasadena now features a futuristic food-ordering kiosk that is powered by facial recognition technology. Should the implementation of the system prove to be successful, the chain has plans to introduce the ordering kiosk to its locations in 2018 on a global scale.
To use one of the machines, a customer must first create a loyalty account and place an order. On a return visit, they will be able to use the kiosk to quickly recall previous orders simply by smiling at the device's camera. Over time, customers will earn "CaliCoins" loyalty points, which can be spent on future orders.
CaliBurger has announced that "Our goal for 2018 is to replace credit card swipes with face-based payments. Facial recognition is part of our broader strategy to enable the restaurant and retail industries to provide the same kinds of benefits and conveniences in the built world that customers experience with retailers like Amazon in the digital world.” For the coming year, CaliBurger has also announced its intent to implement the patty-preparing 'Flippy' from Miso Robotics.
