Snøhetta Designs the Čoarvemátta Facility in Norway
Amy Duong — January 12, 2024 — Art & Design
Architecture studio Snøhetta unveils a look at the Čoarvemátta building, which is an angular educational facility that is nearly finished. It is located in Norway's Sápmi within the snowy environments and is defined by its curved timber structures that are now taking place. It is designed by the studio to blend into the landscape whilst also evoking a visual reminiscent of a reindeer antler.
The studio explains the design concept, stating "The ambition is a building blending into the surrounding landscape, avoiding sharp angles breaking with the landscape’s natural shapes. The shape of the building is inspired by the innermost joint of the reindeer horn – a part of the horn that symbolizes different qualities and strengths but also represents two elements that unite. In fact, the name of the project Čoarvemátta comes from the Sámi words 'čoarvi' and 'mátta', meaning 'horn' and 'root'."
