Google has been adding a new Google Maps feature that will let users know if their taxi or vehicle has changed course more than 500 meters. Right now, Google has only released this feature in India, where "Off-route alerts" can be accessed within the "Stay safer" section of the app, this menu is available to users after they have input their destination and prior to the app entering navigation mode.
The New Google Maps feature being added into the Stay safer section of the app is a clear indication that Google sees this as a safety feature, however, deviating routes is not always a safety concern but notifying passengers can be helpful. Google has not stated whether this feature will get a full release or be only offered in India.
