The Fomes seating solution collection by Mari Koppanen gets its name from the fomes fomentarius mushroom with a fruiting body that is often shaped like a horse's hoof. The designs include a stool and a bench, both of which are upholstered with a soft, leather-like material that's fully biodegradable, cruelty-free and natural. The mushroom leather is textured and suede-like, with fibers that are naturally shorter and less durable.
From fashion and furniture to accessories, mushroom leather is being explored as an alternative to harmful textile production. As Koppanen said to Dezeen, "It is a unique craft and the material could have big potential in the future. Compared to leather, it does not require killing an animal or heavy processes of soaking, tanning and dyeing."
In nature, the large bracket fungus is often found growing on birch trees and as a nod to this, the seating solutions feature wooden legs made of birch.
