A puzzle-inspired modern dwelling is located in a historic building in Vienna's 13th district. The most striking design elements of the interior of this loft apartment are two triangular cross-laminated timber structures. The material was chosen for its sustainability. These features were developed by Vienna-based architecture and research studio Gheorghe which strived to create meaningful visual relationships in the space that exuded warmth and provoked curiosity.
The puzzle-like structures, which are installed opposite of one another, are made up of a total of 698 planks. Gheorghe was mindful in incorporating these modern elements in tandem with the original historical features of the home. In addition to their aesthetic presence, these structures also serve a functional service in the modern dwelling. The owners can utilize the puzzle-like cross-laminated timber accents as shelves and for storage. They also accommodate seating areas and tables.
