O Boticário & IBM Created Fragrances with Machine Learning

Cosmetics brand O Boticário from Brazil partnered with IBM to create two unique new Millennial fragrances with artificial intelligence. These scents were created with the findings from a data-driven study by Symrise, as well as fragrance sales information, a customer's location and age, plus other factors. All this data enabled the AI scent tool Philyra, which is powered by machine learning, to create fragrance combinations for different demographics—with the Brazilian Millennial in mind, the system developed a profile with notes of fruits, flowers, wood, spices, caramel, cucumber and even condensed milk.

O Boticário's two AI-created perfumes will be sold as genderless scents and have the potential to inspire the making of a variety of other cosmetics and personal care products.
