Mike Hewson Designs a New Public Playground with Boulders
Amy Duong — January 12, 2023 — Art & Design
New Zealand-based artist Mike Hewson designs a public playground that is made up of 24 large bluestone boulders. At a first glance, it appears to look like furniture dollies and the boulders are placed on Southbank Boulevard in Melbourne which opens up a space for children to climb and intuitively explore the space.
Zea Newland speaks about space, noting that it is an "Appropriate playground for future generations. These kids will inherit an Earth effed up by climate disasters, they cannot afford to be fragile." On the large boulders, there are slides and ladders that connect to one another for climbing and activities. Notably, the boulders are also accented with handles to invite more climbing.
