Everyone has their own crosses to bear, and the latest Michael Murphy installation shows how the contemporary American political sphere definitely does. The thought-provoking pieces were created by the Georgia-based artist for the UNC Charlotte Center City's art exhibition 'E Pluribus Unum' at the Projective Eye Gallery.
Creating the illusion of a giant cross, the sculpture is created by layering over 40 hand-cut wooden plates that are in fact cut-outs meant to represent political figures and policies. Faces of the former President George W. Bush and current President Barack Obama can be spotted in the intricate piece. The message of the piece demonstrates how American government has become wrapped up in Christian ideology despite the fact that there should be separation of church and state.
The Michael Murphy installation is on viewing until November 1, 2012, conveniently scheduled to end just around election time.
