Meta Will Have the World's Fastest Supercomputer by Mid-2022
Colin Smith — January 24, 2022 — Tech
Meta is expected to finish building its Meta Supercomputer by mid-2022. This supercomputer will be able to perform at a rate of five 'exaflops.' Exaflops are a method of measuring computing power, and are equal to one million 'teraflops.' For reference, a Playstation 5 (PS5) boasts roughly 10 teraflops of computing power, meaning this supercomputer is the equivalent of 500,000 PS5s.
This supercomputer is comprised of 760 Nvidia DGX A100 systems, which collectively totals 6,080 GPUs. This raw computational power is combined with Meta's upcoming 'AI Research SuperCluster' (RSC) to create a supercomputer that can handle the company's workflows up to 20 times faster. This is not the end goal for the RSC, though, as Meta has stated that it wants the number of GPUs in its RSC to reach 16,000 by the end of this year, which would nearly triple the computing power.
The RSC supercomputer can be used for a variety of tasks related to building the metaverse, from creating accurate AI models to simulating, analyzing, and organizing massive quantities of text, images, and videos.
