In order to accommodate more modern healthcare services and technology, Merit, a Northumberland county construction company, will be expanding and rebuilding a hospital in Berwick, which was originally constructed back in 1874.
The news comes after the project was approved by the Northumberland County Council, which also resulted in more funding availability to support the changes. In addition expanding upon the pre-existing structure with purpose-built facilities, Merit will be demolishing vacant areas that are no longer equipped to support modern healthcare services. In addition to providing patients with the services that already exist at the Berwick hospital, the new design will incorporate an accredited endoscopy suite, and include the Well Close Medical Group GP practice—among other changes.
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's Chief Executive Sir James Mackey spoke to the project, stating "For too long, residents have needed a new hospital which is fit to deliver 21st century health care, now and for future generations, [the hospital] is equipped to embrace the latest technology to provide our patients with the highest quality of care. Our new hospital will also enable closer working with primary care, again improving patient care and experience."
